Your guide to common gym terminology & exercise acronyms

Have you ever felt like gym terminology is a completely different language? If you've found yourself confused by terms like RPE, AMRAP, or supersets during a workout, you are not alone.

Understanding these health and fitness terms can feel intimidating, but once you learn the basics, it all becomes much simpler. We're here to break down the common gym and exercise acronyms you’ll hear in your KIC workouts, helping you feel more confident and empowered on your fitness journey.

What are the most common gym terms?

The most common gym terms you'll encounter include acronyms for workout structures and names for specific types of muscle soreness. Here is a list of common gym equipment terminology and fitness phrases to help you build your confidence.

1. What does PB mean in the gym?

PB stands for Personal Best. This is a moment to celebrate your own progress. It represents the fastest you've run, the heaviest you've lifted, or the longest you've held a position. Your PB is a personal achievement, so it’s important to focus on your own wins and not compare yourself to others.

2. What is a rep in exercise?

A rep, or repetition, is one complete movement of an exercise. For example, one full squat or one push-up is considered one rep. Performing several reps in a row is known as a set.

3. What is a set in a workout?

A set is a group of reps performed consecutively. If your KIC workout program calls for "3 sets of 12 reps," you will perform 12 squats, take a brief rest, and then repeat that for two more sets. Think of sets as the chapters of your workout.

4. What is a superset?

A superset involves performing two different exercises back-to-back with very little or no rest in between. This technique is an efficient way to structure your workout, often targeting different muscle groups to save time and increase intensity.

5. What does RPE stand for?

RPE stands for Rate of Perceived Exertion. This is your personal rating of how hard you feel you are working, on a scale from 1 (very light activity, like resting on the couch) to 10 (maximum effort, feeling like you can't continue). RPE is a valuable tool for listening to your body, ensuring you push yourself effectively without overdoing it.

6. What does DOMS mean?

DOMS is an acronym for Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness. This is the muscle soreness you might feel a day or two after a challenging workout. It's a sign that your muscles are adapting and becoming stronger.

7. What does it mean to engage your core?

Engaging your core means gently tightening your abdominal muscles, as if you are preparing to be tickled. This action creates a strong, stable torso, which is crucial for performing most exercises safely and effectively.

8. What does AMRAP mean in fitness?

AMRAP stands for As Many Reps (or Rounds) As Possible. This is a type of workout where you aim to complete as many repetitions or rounds of an exercise circuit as you can within a specific timeframe.

9. What is a cool down?

A cool down consists of gentle stretching and slow movements performed after your main workout. This helps your body gradually transition from a state of high exertion to a state of rest, aiding relaxation and recovery.

10. What is active recovery?

Active recovery involves low-intensity exercise performed on your rest days. Activities like walking, gentle yoga, or easy cycling can help your muscles recover from more intense sessions without being completely sedentary.

What do I do with this new gym terminology?

You don't need to be fluent in every exercise acronym to have a great workout. However, understanding this common gym terminology can help you feel more comfortable and in control during your sessions.

The next time a KIC instructor mentions "RPE" or a "superset," you can feel confident knowing exactly what it means. Your fitness journey is about progress, not perfection. Listen to your body, celebrate your PBs, and embrace the process. You've got this.
