There is something truly special about the way Pilates makes you feel. It is a practice that grounds you, connecting your mind and body in a way that feels both gentle and incredibly powerful. If you have been searching for a way to move your body that feels nurturing rather than punishing, you have come to the right place.
At KIC, we believe wellness should fit into your life, not the other way around. That is why we have created a Pilates app experience that brings the studio directly to your living room. Forget the stress of frantically searching for "Pilates near me" or rushing to make a scheduled class time. With KIC Pilates, the mat is always ready when you are.
Whether you are here to build deep core strength, improve your posture, or simply take 20 minutes for yourself, our Pilates workouts are designed to meet you exactly where you are.
What is Pilates?
Pilates is a low-impact form of exercise that focuses on strengthening the body with an emphasis on core strength. It helps to improve general fitness and overall well-being. But more than that, it is a movement practice that teaches you to connect with your body through controlled, precise movements and conscious breathing.
At KIC, we see Pilates as a way to celebrate what your body can do. It isn’t about being the most flexible person in the room or perfectly executing a teaser on day one. It is about showing up for yourself. Our KIC Pilates offering includes over 200 guided classes led by our team of expert trainers—Kika, Christina, Greta, Mari, and Leo. From calming flows to fiery power sessions, we have a space for you to grow.
What is reformer Pilates?
If you have scrolled through social media, you have likely seen reformer Pilates. This style involves a specific bed-like frame called a reformer, which uses springs and straps to add resistance. It is a fantastic way to train, but it often requires a studio membership.
While some might enjoy the studio environment or the intensity of hot Pilates, we know that accessibility is key to consistency. That is why the KIC app focuses primarily on mat Pilates. It is just as effective at building strength and stability, but you don’t need a room full of heavy machinery to do it. All you need is a Pilates mat and a little bit of space. It allows you to build a sustainable routine that travels with you, wherever life takes you.
Is Pilates resistance training?
A common question we hear is whether Pilates "counts" as resistance training. The answer is a resounding yes.
While you might not be lifting heavy dumbbells like you would in our Strength programs, you are constantly working against resistance. In mat Pilates, that resistance usually comes from your own body weight and gravity. We also love incorporating small props to turn up the heat. Using simple Pilates equipment like resistance bands or sliders challenges your muscles in new ways, helping you build endurance and functional strength without placing heavy stress on your joints.
What is Pilates good for?
The benefits of a regular Pilates practice ripple out into every area of your life. It is not just about the physical changes; it is about how you carry yourself through the world.
- Core Strength: It targets the deep abdominal muscles that support your spine.
- Posture and Alignment: It helps counteract the effects of sitting at desks or looking at phones.
- Mental Clarity: The focus on breathwork calms the nervous system and reduces stress.
- Injury Prevention: By strengthening stabilising muscles, it supports other movements, whether you are tackling a KICRun program or carrying groceries.
It is the perfect complement to other forms of training. Many of our members use Pilates on their active recovery days or pair it with our Dance Cardio sessions for a balanced week of movement.
Does Pilates build muscle?
Absolutely. Pilates is incredibly effective at building lean, toned muscle. Because the movements are slow and controlled, they increase "time under tension," which is a key driver for muscle growth.
You might not build the same bulk as a heavy weightlifter, but you will develop a strong, resilient physique. It creates what we often call "long, lean" muscles. If you are looking to specifically increase muscle mass significantly, we recommend combining your Pilates practice with our dedicated Strength masterclasses found within the Movement hub.
What to wear to Pilates
One of the best things about working out from home with the KIC Pilates app is that there is no dress code. You don’t need the latest designer activewear to belong here.
However, comfort is key. We recommend wearing form-fitting clothing, like leggings and a supportive top. This isn't about vanity; it helps you (and our trainers, if you were in a studio!) see your alignment to ensure you are moving safely. Loose clothing can sometimes get in the way or bunch up during movements like downward dog or bridges.
You won’t need shoes—Pilates is best practiced barefoot or in grip socks to help you feel grounded. If you are looking to elevate your home setup, our Pilates starter pack has everything you need to get moving, including the essential equipment our trainers use in the videos.
