Hybrid training & hyrox

Have you ever felt torn between wanting to lift heavy and wanting to run a long distance? It is a common feeling — wanting to be strong, fast, and functionally fit all at once. What if we told you that you do not have to choose? Welcome to the world of hybrid training, a style of movement that celebrates being a well-rounded athlete.

At KIC, we believe in movement that makes you feel capable and alive. That is why we are so excited about our KIC hybrid offering. It is designed for anyone who wants to challenge their body in new and dynamic ways, combining the best of strength and endurance. With the KIC app, you can access a structured hybrid training program from anywhere and connect with a community that cheers you on every step of the way.

This is your guide to understanding what is hybrid training, how it can transform your fitness, and how KIC can support you on your journey.

What is hybrid strength training?

Hybrid strength training, often called hybrid fitness training, is an approach that combines multiple fitness disciplines into a single, cohesive program. At its core, it is about training to be good at everything, not just one thing. It blends strength and resistance training with cardiovascular work like running, rowing, or swimming.

Instead of separating your "cardio days" from your "lifting days," a hybrid training plan integrates them. The goal is to build a body that can lift heavy, run far, and handle whatever physical challenges life throws your way. It is about building true, functional fitness that serves you both inside and outside the gym.

Types of hybrid training

Hybrid training is not a one-size-fits-all model. It is a flexible philosophy that can be adapted to your goals. You might find a hybrid training split that focuses two days a week on strength and two on running, with a fifth day combining both. Another approach might involve doing a strength workout followed immediately by a cardio session.

The beauty of it is its adaptability. It allows you to focus on the areas you love while still building a well-rounded base. At KIC, our expert trainers, including our Hybrid specialist Mills, guide you through sessions that intelligently combine these elements, ensuring you are training effectively and safely.

How to train hybrid

Starting with hybrid training is about finding balance. A great first step is to incorporate different types of movement into your week. You might follow our Strength program while also adding in a few runs from our KICRun program.

The key is to listen to your body and ensure you are allowing for adequate recovery. Combining high-intensity lifting and running can be demanding, so scheduling rest days and gentler movement like Yoga is crucial for preventing injury and burnout. In the KIC app, you can find a comprehensive hybrid training plan that takes the guesswork out of it, programming your workouts to help you progress sustainably.

What is Hyrox?

If you have been exploring the world of hybrid fitness, you have likely come across the term Hyrox. Hyrox training is both a training methodology and a global fitness competition. It has exploded in popularity because it provides a clear goal for hybrid athletes to work towards.

Hyrox events are held in large indoor arenas, creating an incredible atmosphere. Competitors from all over the world, including from cities like Hyrox Sydney, Melbourne, Perth, and Brisbane, come together to test their fitness.

What does Hyrox stand for?

Interestingly, "Hyrox" does not stand for anything specific. It is a combination of "hybrid" and "rockstar," reflecting the event's ethos of celebrating everyday athletes who train hard and achieve amazing things.

What does Hyrox consist of?

The Hyrox competition format is the same everywhere in the world. It consists of a 1km run followed by one functional workout station, repeated eight times. The total event covers 8km of running and eight functional fitness tests.

Hyrox exercises

The eight functional stations are designed to test your strength, endurance, and overall fitness. The Hyrox exercises are:

  1. SkiErg
  2. Sled Push
  3. Sled Pull
  4. Burpee Broad Jumps
  5. Rowing
  6. Farmer's Carry
  7. Sandbag Lunges
  8. Wall Balls

Each station is a full-body challenge, and when combined with the running, it creates the ultimate test of hybrid fitness.

Hyrox weights

The Hyrox weights for the exercises vary depending on whether you are competing in the individual Open category or the Pro category. For example, the sled push and pull weights are significantly heavier in the Pro division. This tiered system makes the event accessible to a wide range of fitness levels, from first-timers to elite athletes. Our KIC hybrid program is designed to help you build the strength needed to tackle these weights and movements with confidence.
