The most essential things you need for a good home workout are a positive mindset and the desire to move your body. While many effective workouts require no equipment at all, having a few key pieces of home workout equipment can help you build strength and add variety to your routine.
At KIC, we’ve designed our workouts to be completed almost anywhere, making fitness accessible whether you're at the gym, outdoors, or in the comfort of your home. If you're ready to build your own home gym setup, we're here to guide you.
What is the best essential at-home workout equipment?
The best home workout equipment depends on your personal strength and fitness goals. We've listed our recommended home workout accessories from most to least commonly used in KIC workouts, so you can prioritise what’s right for you. Remember to choose weights that feel challenging but allow you to maintain good form.
Here's our list of good home workout equipment to get you started:
- Yoga mat: Provides cushioning and a non-slip surface for floor exercises.
- Light dumbbells: A set between 1-3kg is perfect for adding light resistance.
- Heavy dumbbells: A set between 4-9kg will help you progress in your strength training.
- Kettlebell: A versatile tool for strength and cardio, typically between 8-24kg.
- Bench: Useful for a wide range of strength exercises.
- Mini band: Great for glute activation and adding resistance to lower-body moves.
- Skipping rope: An excellent, low-cost cardio tool.
- Resistance band: A longer band ideal for stretching and resistance exercises.
- Pilates ball: Adds a challenge to core and stability workouts.
- Sliders: Perfect for core exercises and low-impact movements.
- Yoga block: Helps with alignment and support during yoga or stretching.
- Medicine ball: A weighted ball for dynamic strength and power exercises.
How can I work out at home without equipment?
You can absolutely have an effective workout without any special gear. If you don't have access to the home workout accessories listed above, there are plenty of simple, creative alternatives you can find around the house. Movement is for everyone, and we encourage you to use what you have.
Here are some easy at-home equipment substitutes:
- No yoga mat? Use a soft towel or find a comfortable, carpeted area.
- No dumbbells? Use water bottles, canned goods, or other household items with some weight.
- No kettlebell or medicine ball? A tub of laundry detergent can work as a heavy, stable weight.
- No bench? A sturdy chair, ottoman, or your couch can serve the same purpose.
- No bands? You can simply perform the exercises without the added resistance. You'll still feel the burn!
- No skipping rope? Try high knees or jogging on the spot for a great cardio boost.
- No sliders? A pair of socks on a smooth floor works just as well.
- No Pilates ball? A small, firm cushion can provide similar instability for core work.
- No yoga block? Grab a thick, sturdy book.
