What is HIIT training?

HIIT training is a workout style that involves short, intense bursts of exercise followed by brief recovery periods. The goal is to push your heart rate up during the work intervals and then allow it to come down slightly during the rest periods. This method makes your body work harder in a shorter amount of time compared to steady-state cardio.

It is an incredibly efficient way to move your body. A HIIT workout at home can give you amazing benefits in just 15 or 20 minutes, making it a perfect fit for a busy schedule.

What is HIIT exercise?

So, what kind of movements are we talking about? A HIIT exercise is any movement that you can perform with maximum effort for a short period. This can include a huge variety of exercises in HIIT routines. Think bodyweight movements like star jumps, high knees, mountain climbers, and squats.

The beauty of HIIT is its versatility. You can use simple equipment like dumbbells or kettlebells to add intensity, but you absolutely do not need to. Many of the most effective HIIT workouts use nothing but your own body weight.

What does HIIT stand for?

HIIT is an acronym that stands for High-Intensity Interval Training. Let’s break that down:

  • High-Intensity: This refers to the effort you put in. During the work periods, the aim is to work at or near your maximum capacity.
  • Interval: This describes the structure of the workout — short bursts of work followed by periods of rest or lower-intensity movement.
  • Training: This is a method of physical conditioning that you can use to improve your fitness and strength.

Are burpees HIIT?

Yes, burpees are a classic HIIT exercise, and for good reason. They are a full-body movement that skyrockets your heart rate quickly. A burpee involves dropping to the floor, performing a push-up, jumping your feet back in, and then jumping up into the air. Because they engage so many muscle groups and demand so much energy, they are a perfect example of a high-intensity movement used in HIIT circuits. But don’t worry, our KIC trainers always offer low-impact options if burpees aren’t for you!

Is jump roping HIIT?

Jump roping can absolutely be a form of HIIT. It all comes down to the intensity. If you are skipping at a moderate, steady pace, it is more like traditional cardio. However, if you perform intense bursts of fast skipping or double-unders for 30 seconds, followed by 15-20 seconds of rest, you have turned it into a fantastic HIIT workout. It is a brilliant way to improve coordination and cardiovascular fitness.

How to do HIIT

Starting with HIIT is simple, and we are here to support you. The core principle is the work-to-rest ratio. A common starting point is a 1:2 ratio, like 30 seconds of work followed by 60 seconds of rest. As you get fitter, you can move to a 1:1 ratio (30 seconds on, 30 seconds off) or even a 2:1 ratio (40 seconds on, 20 seconds off).

Is HIIT okay when pregnant?

This is an important question. If you were regularly practicing HIIT before your pregnancy and have a low-risk pregnancy, it is often possible to continue with modifications. However, pregnancy is a unique journey for everyone. It is absolutely essential to consult with your doctor or a qualified healthcare professional before starting or continuing any exercise program, including HIIT.
